Summers in Mumbai are painful; because of the high level of humidity, it is surrounded with. Maharashtra’s smallest hill station, Matheran does not allow vehicles within its city boundaries, making it a unique spot for city dwellers.  A  treat for people who are tired of seeing smoke and vehicles every day, Matheran has tried hard to maintain its pristine beauty and is extremely clean and well maintained.
With air fresher than most places, Matheran is first on our list of places to go to escape the Mumbai summer.

2. Khandala – Lonavla – Kamshet

Kamshet, also known as the ‘Paraglider’s Paradise’,  is located 19 km from the twin hill stations of Khandala and Lonavala. A smile automatically reaches for your face when you see the little mud huts with thatched roofs,  good old natural goodness and rivers at arm’s length right outside the Kamshet railway station.

Away from the city,  relaxed as to not see any more concrete.
Go trekking in the nearby areas of Lohagad, Karla caves or Ryewood park, and make sure you experience paragliding over the beautiful hills and the  sunflower fields.

A favourite among trekkers, the two main attractions near Malshej ghat are the Shivneri fort ( the birthplace of Shivaji) and the 3rd century Budddhist caves. A place that can lighten and freshen up your mood. That’s what regulars describe the spot as.

Highly suitable for both trekkers and families who want to live n the beautiful cottages overlooking the hills, Bandhardara is even  more enchanting towards the end of summer and beginning of monsoon when you find dew drops on your face as you open your eyes to lush green forests and chirps of local birds for a change from the daily routine.

5.  Lavasa

A hidden gem among the western ghats, Lavasa is close to the Varasgaon Dam and the long winding roads that lead up to it are a hit with long-distance bikers. Th hill ranges that surround the area are filled with dense vegetation and the area is home to a number of activities starting from Kayaking to jet skiing and everything in between like rapelling, trekking and rock climbing.

Literally meaning ‘The place of 5 hills’, Panchgani is more famed as the place all parents send their kids to for boarding school. Nothing to worry about but, for this old British summer resort is a beautiful place with hilly terrains on one side and coastal shores on the other, with horse carts, and adventures such as paragliding to entertain all kinds of people.

Also referred to as the ‘Abode of Serpents’, Saputara is located in the forest region of Sahyadri Ranges. The town is situated on the Gujarat Maharashtra border t its height of 1000m above sea level and its maximum temperature during summer is 28 degree Celsius! (Whew!)

One of those places where you can sit with yourself and read a book.

This lesser known spot known for its long stretches of white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters has water so  clear that one can see marine life up to a depth of 20 feet. Some must do activities include snorkelling, scuba diving and zorbing. It is a protected region for dolphins and sea turtles and  is an  all-weather favourite getaway. Places around Tarkarli are equally loved, namely Malvan, Dhamapur lake, Padmagarh and Sidhudurg forts.
